A Guide to Kitchen Remodeling

The kitchen is the core of the home, where people gather for meals, homework, games, and conversations. A contractor can help a homeowner guide throughout the process, whether it’s a complete overhaul or a simple facelift.

A kitchen remodel is an investment that offers a great return. Almost every homeowner plans to perform house remodeling at least once in their life. However, it can be a time-consuming and frustrating process that disrupts the family’s life for weeks or months. Hiring the best contractor can ease the stress by keeping the project on time and to avoid expenses from spiraling out of control.

Defining the Must-Haves

Deciding what the homeowner wants is the initial step when remodeling the kitchen. It will help narrow down the choices and set a budget. It can feel like the choices for their kitchen are limitless. However, homeowners must choose what’s essential to them. Focus on your priorities first, so that you know which compromises to make if things do not go according to plan.

Green Leafed Plants On Kitchen Island

Setting the Budget

According to HomeAdvisor, the average cost of remodeling a kitchen that is “200 feet or more and typically runs between $30,000 and $60,000. Upscale remodels can reach from $75,000 to $100,000 and beyond.”

How can homeowners determine a realistic budget for their kitchen remodeling project? A good rule is to spend at least five to fifteen percent of their home’s total value. For instance, if a homeowner’s house is valued at $300,000, a good kitchen remodeling budget would be ten percent of that overall value, hence at least $30,000.

Hiring the Professionals

Dismissing the advantages of hiring a kitchen contractor is one of the most common mistakes homeowners make in their kitchen remodel projects. These professionals help them keep on track, on the job, and budget.

A kitchen contractor is the point person for the kitchen renovation. They provide and source all the materials, organize the timeline, and employ the subcontractors who will be working on the project. In short, they are what make the remodeling project run flawlessly and complete on time.

Hiring a contractor is indeed an investment. However, it is worth contacting a professional, rather than attempting to DIY.

Timeline

Timelines depend on your specific needs. The information in this article should be taken as a guideline; for a complete assessment that is specifically tailored to your situation, consult with Inspired Remodels.

Read Darya W.‘s review of Inspired Remodels on Yelp

For a moderate-sized kitchen, renovations may take six to eight weeks. Renovation projects that involve structural changes, such as wall removals and reconfiguration of the floor plan, may take a bit longer. A reasonable timeline might be ten to twelve weeks.

Overall, renovating one’s kitchen can be a lengthy process, but it is worth it in the end. A custom kitchen renovation can offer homeowners more fulfillment and contentment than anything else. Upgrading your home can be a great investment for any homeowner. In the long term, most kitchen renovations pay for themselves or come close to it through market appreciation, increasing the market value if you do choose to one day sell your home.

Effective and Eco-Friendly Termite Extermination Methods

Termites are among the pests that frighten homeowners the most, causing billions of dollars in damage every year in America. They often feed on wood, causing damage to insulation, paper, books, and even filtration systems and swimming pool liners.

Homeowners can find many noticeable signs that indicate a termite infestation. Muddy patches on wooden surfaces, termite tubes, sawdust, and termite wings are common signs.

Homeowners suffering from this problem should ensure they act fast but with the service of the right experts. Understanding what to do to get rid of such pests and safeguard the home from them in the future is crucial.

Chemical pesticides are typically the first thing to come to mind for most homeowners. However, they are also other options for termite extermination.

Tent Fumigation

Termite fumigation is a common method when it comes to termite extermination. But what does this entail?

Fumigation is an effective method for getting rid of termite infestations within the home. It enables pesticides to penetrate the wood and kill termites in hard-to-reach areas, rather than having to identify every termite infestation area. Tent fumigation is safe when proper procedures are followed.

Fumigation is one of the ways in which Garden Grove termites are exterminated. The exterminating cost differs based on the method employed, the access, and the structure area. The process involves sealing the home and sending gas into the closed space. It is kept there to permeate into the wood and other structures for at least two to three days.

After the home is opened, the air is assessed to ensure it to be toxin-free before everyone is to be allowed to enter the termite-free area.

Natural Ways to Eliminate Termites

Here are some of the safest and most eco-friendly ways to exterminate termites completely.

Natural oils are helpful in repelling termites as a pesticide. Not all are aware of this, but neem oil’s anti-microbial properties make an excellent tool for termite extermination. Further, orange oil has d-limonene, a compound that destroys termites.

Who would’ve thought that aloe vera gel can also be used for preventing termites? One can remove the gel from the aloe vera plant and spread it across the area. The gel establishes a barrier in which the pests are not able to penetrate.

Salt is also a natural remedy, which can be easily found in any American kitchen. Sprinkling salt over the damaged furniture is useful in driving away termites. Homeowners can fill a syringe with a mixture of water and salt and inject it into the termites’ nesting holes.

Nonetheless, these eco-friendly termite extermination methods only work if the property damage is not extensive.

Overall, understanding how to treat termites properly is the initial step in defeating and stopping them. Nonetheless, it is always best to call a pest control specialist to help resolve the termite infestations and damages, especially given the amount of damage a termite infestation can cause to a person’s home. Proper care and treatment are required to avoid further damage to one’s property and budget.

Local Entrepreneur And Socialite Divorce Amidst Corporate Bankruptcy

Jennifer Hall was thinking about Tyler Hall again. Tyler was a violent brute, unbeknownst to those who worshipped him as a successful entrepreneur.

Jennifer walked over to her window and reflected on her picturesque surroundings. She had always loved Sanborn County. It was a place that inspired her, yet it brought out her depression because she had moved so far away from her friends and family. Marrying Tyler a decade ago seemed like such a good idea, but little did she know that their marriage would leave her feeling alone and isolated.

Then, she saw something in the distance, or rather someone. It was the tall, looming figure of Tyler. He had just pulled into the driveway and began to walk inside.

Jennifer gulped. She could always tell by his stride if he was in a bad mood coming home from work. He was a controlling, mean alcoholic. His friends saw him as a narcissistic control freak. Once, he even made his lead engineer have a mental breakdown at the office because he had worked the team to the bone to meet an insane product launch deadline.

The rain came pouring down. Jennifer was stressed. As he stepped inside and slammed the front door behind him, Jennifer felt her back freeze.

“Look Jennifer,” growled Tyler, with an arrogant glare. “It’s not that I don’t love you, but I want you to leave town for the weekend. I’m sick and tired of never being alone.”

Jennifer looked at him, shocked. “You want me to leave because you can’t stand me? Fine! You know what? Let me leave you for good! I want a divorce.”

Tyler was startled. His mind started to race. His company had not been performing well. He and Jennifer hadn’t signed a prenuptial agreement. They had been to marriage counseling for his alcoholism and violent behavior, but nothing had improved.

He took a deep breath. “Jennifer, I-.” Before he could say another word, she screamed back at him: “Tyler, I want a divorce! I hate you! I want a divorce NOW. We are ending this marriage and I am taking half of your money!”

“I’m afraid I declared my company bankrupt today,” explained Tyler.

“No!” objected Jennifer. “You liar! Do you think I’m stupid?!”

“I do not!” retorted Tyler. “If you want a divorce—fine. But there’s no point in hiring a lawyer and taking me to court, Jennifer. My company is dying and you aren’t going to walk away with anything from the business. That’s why I thought we needed to take a break. I needed time and space to process…how…stressful it’s been. Everything has gotten worse in the last year.”

Woman in White Dress Shirt Sitting Beside Woman in White Long Sleeve Shirt

What will happen next to Tyler and Jennifer Hall? We will be following this story closely and reporting back. For now, here is a bit of divorce advice.

For those who are in a financially strained, high-conflict marriage, we recommend avoiding litigation altogether. Couples who already have severe unresolved issues during the marriage will only find themselves more at odds with one another in court. Furthermore, traditional divorce can cost tends of thousands of dollars in legal fees per person.

Instead, consider mediation, a process facilitated by a neutral third party who will objectively act in the best interests of both parties to reach mutual terms of separation.

It’s Time to Build Your Dream Business and WorkSpace

Some of the greatest businesses were founded during tough times. With the current state of the world, many of us have lost jobs but also gained new insight, turning our creative hobbies or ideas into startups.

Starting a new business and scaling it over time can be really tough. We’re sharing our take on building your dream business and office.

Business Growth

Identify Your Niche

Who are the people you are meant to serve? This isn’t just a question you should ask yourself when you do marketing; it should be one of the first questions you ask yourself when starting a business. Identify your ideal customer by using a combination of psychographic and demographic data, and create personas to inform your decisions on how you will market and sell your products or services to them.

Build A Sales Funnel

Making a sales funnel for your business is very important, as these funnels can automate your business over time. Sales funnels help your business grow faster by establishing processes that will streamline operations. The process of making a sales funnel might be tiring, but it is completely worth the time and effort.

Manage Your Transactions Effectively

Choosing a suitable customer management system is in the best interest of your business. Tracking individual transactions manually can be almost impossible and time-consuming as your business grows. You can use cloud-based software to handle accounting and repetitive tasks. You can then allocate the saved time to other productive tasks.

Study Your Competitors

You should always study your competitors when considering making big business decisions. Competitor research can provide you with valuable insights into how your competitor doing well and what you can do better. These strategies can be leveraged to grow your business. This will give you valuable insight so that you can formulate your differentiation, value proposition, and competitive advantage.

Office Design

For those who have completed the above, started their business, and been well underway towards growing and scaling their team and operations, it may be time for you to think about creating a space for those big crazy dreams to come to reality!

According to Business Wire, Technavio Research reports that the increase in startup companies being founded is the driving force behind the increased demand for office furniture in the United States.

Smart Office Desks

Investing in smart office desks can help you maximize the available space in your workspace. Ergonomic desks suited to the custom needs of your workers is one of the best investments that you can make for better productivity of your employees.

Ergonomic Office Chairs

Choose the best quality ergonomic office chairs to provide your employees with much-needed comfort when working. When investing in office chairs, keep in mind that most of your employees will be sitting in them for the most part of their day; ask for their input as to what would be most comfortable to them.

Use Vertical Space

You can install shelving to make the most out of the vertical space available in your office. Utilizing vertical space as storage space prevents clutter from gathering in the office. You can buy desks and add shelves to the upper portion. Wall-mounted shelves are also a great option.

Dog And Cat People: Personality And Characteristics

When it comes to owning cats and dogs, pet owners have several differences and similarities which are peculiar to them and are mostly due to the temperament of each animal type. In this article, we will look at the personality traits and characteristics of the owners of the two species: what makes them different and what they share in common.

Differences Between Dog Owners And Cat Owners

Dogs are very active and far more sociable than cats. This tends to be reflected in their owners. Dog owners tend to socialize more than cat owners. Dog owners tend to be more friendly and extroverted than cat owners, who are usually people who live and spend time alone. Also, people who keep dogs as pets tend to be more confident and assertive compared to owners of cats. A research study found that cat owners are a third more likely to live alone and twice as likely to live in an apartment compared to dog owners.

Cat owners tend to be more neurotic than dog lovers. Cat lovers tend to be more prone to anxiety and neurotic disorders compared to dog owners. Unlike dogs that sit with their owners, providing affection for just being there, cats, on the other hand, are far less likely to reassure their owners through difficult and emotional times.

Cat owners tend to be reclused, preferring their own whims rather than following the rules, which can be attributed to their colder mannerisms and preference for independence. Cats generally like to do as they please. Dog owners are more likely to obey their owners, symbolizing their loyalty.

Cat people are more sensitive than dog people. And sensitivity is not always a bad thing! According to a research study conducted at Carroll University, dog owners show fewer signs of sensitivity compared to cat owners.

afro, afro hair, animal

Dog owners tend to tolerate cats while cat owners strongly dislike dogs. Studies also reveal that people who own dogs tend not to have problems with adding a cat to their life, but cat owners are often not open to buying or accepting a dog as a pet.

Similarities Between Dog Owners and Cat Owners

Research shows that those with pets have stronger heart health than those without. Pet owners are investing more and more into pet healthcare. Veterinary services such as the specialization of a cardiology consultant have become increasingly in high demand.

Dogs and cats are the two most common domesticated animals kept as pets in our world today. Both animals are affectionate in their unique ways: they show that to their owners and expect to receive that same kind of love and attention from their owners.

Dog and cat owners always like to keep their animal friends by their side to cuddle and sleep with them. They even feed their pets at the same time that they eat. These pets occupy a familial role in the lives of the owners; like children and family members, they affect the owner’s selection of apartment or home, furniture, car, and so on. In fact, a rover.com study found many pet owners preferred their fur companion to human company. 52% of cat owners preferred spending time with their cats than with people, and 42% of dog owners preferred to spend time with their dogs than people.

Protecting The Foundation Of Your Home

Termites may be less common than the average insect, but they can cause a great deal of damage compared to other pests. The kind of damage termites cause can severely threaten a home’s structural integrity. These insects are so subtle they may not even be noticed until they have gone far in chewing through wood, flooring, and walls. Often, homeowners will deal with three main types of termites, which are the subterranean, drywood, and dampwood termites. Let’s take a closer look at each of these types and the challenges they present.

Types of Termites

Subterranean Termites

These are the most common type of household termites which form large underground colonies and obtain moisture by building mud tubes while they move back and forth between a food source and the colony. They can spread in an underground tunnel, feeding on wood materials in the environment.

Drywood Termites

Unlike subterranean, Drywood termites are not that easy to detect. Their biological makeup enables them to infest homes without even touching the soil. These termites infest wood used in building homes as well as infesting wood furniture.

Dampwood Termites

Dampwood termites thrive in wood that contains high moisture. Most damp wood termites don’t need to come in contact with the soil. These termites are rarely found in the home or other man-made structure, since woods use in constructing these structures are often not high in moisture.

Four Brown Wooden Chairs

Termite Treatments

Termites can cause extensive home damage if left untreated. These pests bore into wood and can thrive deep in a home’s foundation slowing eating away at its core. The best bet against them is with extermination treatment, which we will look at next.

Monitoring and Bait Station

To get started, the extent of termite activity is determined by setting up monitoring stations at key points around a property. These bait stations will attract termites as the bait station contains chemicals that termites will ingest, then carry back to the colony and spread to other times. This addresses the termite problem from the source and is often the most ideal extermination treatment option when dealing with large populations.

Gas Fumigation

Another great treatment option is by gas fumigation which controls termite infestation as the treatment eliminates them in the home right back to their living area. Once inhaled, fumigants destroy a termite’s metabolism causing it to die. Grand Oaks Termite Control is a highly reputable extermination service that offers termite tenting in Arcadia, CA.

Termiticide Application

Termiticide usage may be necessary for termite infestation as it can help to eliminate the current population preventing future infestation. Termiticides are applied on the surface or injected into compromised wood or added directly into the soil around the home, which makes the environment uncomfortable for termites to thrive.

Moisture Removal

As we have learned already, termites love a high moisture environment. A simple option of exterminating termites is to ensure all plumbing leaks are fixed quickly and ensure proper drainage around the home. Wood touching the ground is at high risk, so ensure woods don’t touch the ground and use pre-treated wood which prevents termite infestation as this wood hardly decays or rot.

If you have termites and need an exterminator, give Grand Oaks Termite Control a call today.

The Legacy Of A Great Mind

Life moves extremely fast, especially for those who achieve greatness. As a trailblazer, Steve Jobs left behind an enduring legacy in the world of business and entrepreneurship. In his lifetime, he accomplished a great deal, leading Apple on a course that made the company the first-ever trillion-dollar company. Apple still making incredible leaps to this very day, thanks to the innovations and contributions of Steve Jobs.

Semi-opened Laptop Computer Turned-on on Table

Sadly, he passed away due to pancreatic cancer in 2011. His death took place at the age of 56. Like all great planners and great minds, Jobs was prepared for what came after his time. When he passed away, he left his fortune to his wife Laurene Powell Jobs. Today, Forbes estimates his wife to be worth around $16.4 billion, making her the 56th richest person in the world. Jobs also left some of his fortunes to his daughter Lisa Brennan-Jobs, who shared a different mother from his three other children.

While not everyone might be the founder of such a fascinating company while leading such a complicated personal life, it is always important to be prepared—to arrange for who will see and receive what after you leave this world. When it comes to long-term planning of estate, wills, and trusts, it is best to get your affairs in order before it is too late.

Start by making sure that you establish a will. It is very important to have this document arranged and finalized before you proceed with all else.

Focus on building a succession plan. When you are no longer here, it is important that you leave the right people in charge of your estate. This means establishing a power of attorney by appointing the person that you believe will be the wisest and most responsible when making key decisions with major control over what you have left behind.

Also, be sure to invest in the right kind of insurance both for your estate and for yourself. Life insurance and insurance for your business would be a wise investment.

Consider investing in a charitable trust, too. This can be an excellent way to make sure that your money can be used fairly and wisely, without worrying about it falling into the wrong hands.

Take the time to organize all records on property ownership, business dealings, and financial transactions. The easier these are to find, the easier it is to ensure that everything will go as planned.

In summary, ensure that you start with a will and work forward from there. Organize all important documents to make sure that everything planned will be carried out as intended. Doing this will provide you with peace of mind; you will pass on with the knowledge that every dollar shall be allocated according to your wishes.

That said, this article should not be taken as legal advice. We highly recommend consulting with a firm like Burris Law; their team of award-winning lawyers specializes in wills, trusts, and estate planning.

Creativity In The Workplace

The nature of work has been completely revolutionized over the last mere decade. The way we work has evolved to prioritize the well-being of the human mind and body and fostering collaboration and productivity. Work-life balance, burnout, and mental health have become primary topics as of late.

We typically think of cool, modern, and hip millennialism when we think of the “anti-cubicle” philosophy and attitude of work. Silicon Valley tech giants like Google were the first to popularize open and creative office spaces. However, the concept was invented before cubicles.

American architect Frank Lloyd Wright was known for his beautiful open concept homes and offices. He felt that physical barriers were oppressive. “Boxes are fascist,” Wright once noted. He famously and meticulously designed an open office with employees sitting at their own desks with plenty of space between one another. For the managers, Wright had private offices built on an upper mezzanine.

In 1960, Herman Miller created a corporation dedicated to furniture research. It was he who was the first to create the office cubicle. The cubicle became a cost-effective and convenient way to create organization and separation, which is a benefit that still holds true today.

Wright’s idea became copied and renditioned into the many open offices we see today, but without his genius. The problem wasn’t that the open office concept is flawed, but that companies did not take creative design into consideration when assembling the spaces. They simply assumed that arranging desks and chairs of any kind on an open floor would achieve the same result as Wright.

Open floor offices are thought to foster ease of communication. However, this intention doesn’t seem to serve an actual need. In fact, studies have shown that open offices may be overrated. Employees don’t feel as though physical separation prevents them from interacting with one another. It was discovered that employees were frustrated by the lack of noise and visual privacy. Although visibility and transparency are key to any workplace, a lack of privacy and structure can promote feelings of anxiety and hopelessness.

Before you design your new office layout, speak with your employees to get a sense of the environment that they would ideally thrive in. Instead of choosing a layout based on its popularity or trendiness, take your employees’ suggestions into real consideration. Studies suggest that the open office trend promotes a false sense of productivity.

Office furniture such as cubicles, desks, tables, and chairs don’t have to be boring. You can revamp your office affordably by purchasing used office furniture from Creative Office Furniture, based in Los Angeles and Orange County. They offer a wide selection of office furniture and interior services along at competitive prices.

Beware of These Tiny Villains

Termites are incredibly fascinating creatures. They are a critical part of our ecology, breaking down materials into nutrients for our soil. However, these critters, despite their tiny size, can cause enormous damage to your home. These pests can crawl through all different types of materials, undetected. They can silently chew through walls, flooring, and wood. Not only can they eat surfaces and exteriors of your home, they can also destroy the structure of your home, putting your safety and hygiene at risk. The severe damage caused by their invasion can result in the need to pay for costly repairs.

Selective Focus Photography of Brown Surface

There are different types of termites, each with different patterns and habitats.

Drywood termites form colonies through wood and small holes. Infestation can be prevented by storing firewood and scraps outside and away from the home.

Subterranean termites build “mud tubes” to crawl through. Infestation can be prevented by regularly clearing out water so that it does not gather at the foundation of the house. Be sure to manage humidity levels with properly ventilated attics and basements.

Dampwood termites tend to inhabit stumps, old trees, and fences. To avoid infestation, avoid moisture accumulation. Repair faucets, water pipes, and air conditioning units as soon as you notice any leakage.

You can follow the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) for its bi-annual Bug Barometer®, a seasonal forecast of the pest pressure and activity. They analyze weather and behavioural patterns to determine long-term predictions for each region of the United States. In spring 2019, NPMA found there to be excessive moisture across the country, warning homeowners to expect early pest activity.

Termites can become every homeowner’s greatest nightmare, wet or dry. You can never exclude any environment from the possibility of a home invasion.

Termites cause more than $5 billion annually in property damage. These costs aren’t covered by insurance for homeowners. You can try to look out for termite infestation by keeping an eye out for what appears to be water damage or maze-like patterns. The smell will be similar to mold or mildew. However, without regular inspection, termites are usually not noticeable until the infestation has gotten severe. Termite inspections can proactively save you thousands of dollars in repairing damage.

If you suspect your home has been infested, it is highly recommended that you contact a termite exterminator immediately. A professional exterminator will first conduct an inspection to see how much of your home has been affected.

We discovered Natural Science Exterminating, a termite extermination company based in Anaheim, servicing Orange County, Los Angeles, and Riverside for over 25 years. They offer a 4 step process for termite control, including inspection, treatment, repair, and prevention.

The company will leave tent fumigation as the last resort for severe infestations. They specialize in organic termite control. If your property has been damaged with dry rot, the company can also provide in-house carpentry repair. They are licensed and bonded, and guarantee all of the work they perform.

Natural Science Exterminating specializes in environmentally conscious termite extermination. You can give them a call to receive a free consultation.

How To Plan Your Home Renovation

In Improving America’s Housing 2019, Harvard reports the home remodelling market to be worth $450 billion.

Anyone who has ever been through a home remodelling project knows that it always ends up taking longer and costing more than expected. We gathered our top tips for planning your renovation that you can be as prepared as possible.

Person Holding Pencil
  1. Choose a contractor with excellent communication – Communication should be your most important decision factor when choosing a contractor. Imagine you taking a day off work to welcome your new contractor. You agree to that they will arrive at your home at 10:00am that day. It’s 10:30am and they haven’t appeared. They haven’t called or texted you. You have tried calling multiple times, and there is no answer, and now an hour has passed. Yikes!
  2. Focus on value rather than cost – Home remodelling expenditures appear to be increasing more than ever before. This is likely due to the fact that home owners are willing to invest in the best service and experience they can find. You want to find someone who is punctual, skilled, experienced, and hard-working. These qualities will save you from unnecessary headaches and should be more important to you than getting the cheapest quote.
  3. Read reviews on contractors – Not all contractors come equal. Be sure to review their portfolio and reviews so that you can choose someone with a reputation for quality, excellence, and care. Melissa Alesi found herself in a nightmare of a home renovation after the contractor had not only failed to meet her requirements, but also left her with a mess to clean up. Had she chosen someone with a proven track record rather than her first Google Search, she could have found someone who would have delivered a beautiful end result, right from the start.
  4. Expect there to be dust – If you are allergic, be sure to stock up on your medicine and dust masks! It will be virtually impossible to clean up while the renovation is in progress. You will have to bear with a lot of dust, but it will be worth it in the end!
  5. Store everything in sealed boxes and bags – This will protect your belongings from dust and accidental damages. You also want to give your contractor a clean and tidy workspace so that they can work as efficiently and effectively as possible. Contracting requires physical labour and time, which will go directly to your invoice. Clear out the clutter and remove anything that can slow down your renovation.
  6. Communicate with your contractor – This ties back to the first point, as communication must take place in both directions. You cannot expect your contractor to know exactly what you want unless you have explained it to them in detail, and shown photos or examples, if possible. As much detail as possible will give your contractor a better understanding of exactly how you want your home to end up.
